Factors such as sun exposure and gravity, combined with the natural aging process, can have negative effects on the face and neck as you get older. A facelift effectively improves signs of aging (wrinkles, deep creases, volume loss and sagging) to restore a more youthful and attractive facial appearance. During many facelift procedures, we also include fat grafting to many areas of the face that show volume loss.
Technically referred to as “rhytidectomy,” facelift surgery can improve the following conditions:
- Sagging in the midface
- Nasolabial folds (creases around the nose and mouth)
- Jowls (drooping tissue along the jawline)
- Displaced fat deposits
- Hanging skin in the neck area
During your initial consultation, Dr. Barlow will personally meet with you to discuss your desires for this procedure, so he has a thorough understanding of your overall goals and expectations. He will also review your medical history and any current medications you are taking. Dr. Barlow will then perform a physical examination of your face and neck before he explains the procedure, where your incisions will be made, and the results you can expect.
Facelift Procedure
Facelift surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and typically takes about three to five hours to complete. General anesthesia is administered to eliminate discomfort throughout the procedure. Incisions are made from the front of the ears, down and around the back of the ear to make them as inconspicuous as possible. The tissues of the face are repositioned, excess skin and fat are removed, and the incisions are closed with sutures.
It’s important to remember that a facelift will not restore a youthful appearance in the forehead or eye area. To improve these regions, an eyelid lift or forehead lift can be performed in conjunction with a facelift.
